Keeping the Boreal Forest intact

Protect the threatened woodland caribou

The woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou), cousin of the European reindeer, is an iconic Boreal species.
The shy and elusive animal, whose profile graces the back of the Canadian quarter, is a symbol of Canadian wilderness. Woodland caribou rely on large tracts of undisturbed Boreal Forest. They are unable to tolerate landscape changes, particularly those produced by logging. Woodland caribou have been pushed off 50% their range across Canada and are therefore listed as threatened with extinction.

On May 18, 2010, the Canadian Forest Products Association of Canada entered into the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement with ForestEthics and 8 other environmental group to develop conservation plans to preserve this important species. Over the next 3 years, FPAC members will defer logging across 30 million hectares of caribou habitat while conservation plans are being developed.
