Sierra Pacific Industries must stop its destructive logging practices certified by the "Sustainable" Forestry Initiative

If we are to have healthy, resilient and biodiverse forests in California, Sierra Pacific Industries’ (SPI) land management and SFI-certified logging practices must change. Alternatives exist to SPI’s heavy reliance on clearcutting and other forms of plantation conversion. However, rather than be a leader in green logging practices, SPI persists in using outdated and highly destructive logging methods.

We must expose the "Sustainable" Forestry Initiative's greenwash

We think a better name for SFI would be "Same old Forest Industry." While SFI purports to be a nonprofit serving the public good through promotion of sustainable logging practices, the bogus forest certification scheme is in fact a trade group representing the interests of destructive logging and paper companies around the world. We think this is deception and hypocrisy of the worst kind.

ForestEthics will be ramping up a campaign to shine a bright green spotlight on SFI's greenwash to make sure that companies such as Sierra Pacific Industries can no longer hide behind this phony certification. By exposing the truth behind this "green" label, we'll be striking a major blow to the primary method SPI and SFI uses to trick the public and the marketplace.

We can make Sierra Pacific Industries become an industry leader

To be an industry leader for sustainable logging practices, SPI must:

1. Permanently protect the highest priority Endangered or High Conservation Value Forest parcels;
2. Adopt an ecosystem-based management approach for its lands;
3. Adopt a multi-year plan for Forest Stewardship Council certification with annual benchmarks. 

Targeting SPI and changing California's forestry rules is important work. That's why we're working with groups like Ebbetts Pass Forest Watch to take on the destructive practices of this logging giant.
