Redding Record Searchlight -- SPI should try cooperation [Letter to the Editor]

Thank you for your editorial about the Humboldt Redwood Company's acquisition of Pacific Lumber Co. lands and its willingness to engage with the environmental community.

Your point that Sierra Pacific Industries' Red Emmerson would likely not take part in such activity is both true and unfortunate. While HRC's acquisition had support from diverse stakeholders such as the Sierra Club, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and countless newspaper editorial boards due to its practices and open dialogue, SPI is plagued by controversy, unfavorable media stories and lawsuits.

It does not have to be this way. ForestEthics and our partner groups throughout the state would be happy to have the same kind of collaborative relationship with SPI as we do with Tembec, Lowe's, the Limited and Dell. However, until that time, we will continue to tell businesses to buy from "greener" alternatives — HRC among them.
