Friday May 10, 2013 A cowboy at the airport had welcomed us when we arrived from British Columbia in Calgary, Alberta. In retrospect, this was a sign. I was in Calgary to join a delegation representing First Nations (Canada’s indigenous people), landowners, commercial fishermen, youth, and labourers. Looking back on the trip, it was as if we had actually travelled back in time to the Wild West.... read more »

Wednesday Feb 6, 2013 An eagle was perched in the tall branches of one of the elegant cottonwood trees along the Skeena River. On was a grey and misty day last Saturday, the First Nations and communities from along the Skeena, Nass, and Stikine Rivers gathered at Kitsum-Kalum Hall, at the confluence of the Kalum and Skeena Rivers in Terrace, a small city in northwest British Columbia.... read more »

Wednesday Sep 12, 2012 Last night my coworker Jason and I camped in BC’s Sacred Headwaters. We were awoken in the middle of the night by gentle drops of rain. In the morning, we packed up our soggy gear and headed up the road to Telegraph Creek, another Tahltan First Nation community in the Stikine watershed. ... read more »

Tuesday Sep 4, 2012 One morning during our Sacred Headwaters trip, minutes after emerging from our tents, the swarms of black flies, mosquitoes, and no-see-ums had found fresh southern blood. Even though I had warned my coworker Jason of the bugs, nothing prepares visitors for the onslaught if they haven’t experienced it before. “So this is northern Canada, huh?” Jason asked.... read more »

Thursday Aug 30, 2012 Jason spent last week in BC's Sacred Headwaters, where he and his comrade Karen Tam Wu traveled to film a short documentary featuring the region's community. It's currently threatened by industrial development, including 'fracking', in its pristine, ecologically-important land.... read more »
